Hey readers!
First the boring facts that you need to know about me: My name is Emmi, I am a third year student and my pathway to the board started last year (year 2022) when I was a member on the Event team. In this text I will first tell a bit about what kind of responsibilities I have as an Event Manager and then I tell my experiences of what I have got to experience as a board member.
Then to the interesting part. What have I been doing this year? This year I have been on the LUTES board as an Event Manager. As the name already says I am responsible from the event side in LUTES. I organize what I want to organize and what I think that could benefit or inspire our community. Per week I do around 20-40 hours work depending how close we are from the actual event.
First a little bit about the events that I have organized or helped to organize.
- Dive into Deeptech: Speaker event about the cloud services.
- Tallinn Excursion: We traveled to Tallinn to get the specifics about the startup culture there.
- Idearace: Biggest business idea competition in the South-Karelia area.
- Pöhinä Sauna: Networking event to get new connections.
- XX Factory: Event that provides to the participants concrete skills that they can use in working life. Event that focuses on inspiring and motivating.
- LUTES Gala: Networking evening at the cruise where we celebrated the journey of LUTES.
As you can see as an Event Manager you can organize very different kinds of events. There is not one right way to pursue this position; you can make it to look like you and that year’s board vision and mission,
By being part of the board you will have an amazing change to connect with people all over Finland. There are countless times that me and our board have traveled to other cities to represent our community. The amount of connections that I have made because of LUTES is uncountable.

Also I have gained so much more confidence while speaking English, presenting myself or something else and my networking skills have developed to the next level. Being part of the board is one of the best ways to learn new skills that the lectures could never teach you.

Hey you!
I am Jenna, a third-year business student in LUT University and the Finance Manager of LUTES. My journey in LUTES started in 2022 as an Event Team member when I was only a freshman. During that year I got to see how events are organized from an idea to reality and help that year’s Event Managers with those steps. During the year I became even more drawn to LUTES and therefore I applied to the board of 2023. Needless to say, but I am glad that I did! This year has been full of learning, challenging myself and making new stuff happen with other amazing board members. Overall this year has enabled many great experiences and opportunities.
As a board member in LUTES, you have two kinds of responsibilities. (1) The ones that are common for the whole board and (2) the ones that are related to your own specific area of responsibility. The board together takes care of the administrative tasks, represents LUTES and makes the events happen on the event day. For example, I have been sitting in our monthly board meetings, representing LUTES in other entrepreneurship societies’ events in different cities and assisting our event manager with various events during the actual event day with whatever needed and so on.
As a Finance manager I have been taking care of the money side of our organization. Finance has a very important role in the existence and operation of the organization. It’s been my responsibility to follow and document all the expenses and incomes that we’ve had during the year. It is crucial to make sure that we don’t spend more than what we have. I have also been in contact with our accountant and done a lot of collaboration with the other board members to make sure that all our expenses are reasonable. I have also been the one in charge of our invoicing, which includes paying bills, sending them and taking care of reimbursements.
This role has taught me a lot about the financial side of the student organization and overall how it is like to manage money transfers in the students based society. Being on the board has helped me to improve my skills with time management, co-operating and I have gotten better with my English. I’ve also got many new connections and noticed that my comfort zone has significantly widened due to my year on board.
If you are ready to do things together, develop as a person and you are a systematic person who likes to work with numbers then this role is a great fit for you!
I am happy to answer any questions you may have, so feel free to ask whenever you see me on Parvi or send me an email. ( jenna@lutes.fi )
Ps. Just a reminder that you don’t have to have your own company to be able to apply for the LUTES board. I didn’t either. Interest and ambition towards entrepreneurship is enough.

Hey yo!
My name is Riikka, and I want to introduce you to the secrets of being a Marketing Manager – what it could offer you! I hopped into this during my second year of industrial engineering and management studies – without too much knowledge about anything related to marketing. I think the most important part is a true ambition to be better day by day.
This year, I have learned to manage and build websites, graphical design, and marketing on social media and other platforms. This learning journey has been both challenging and exhilarating, and my involvement with LUTES has provided an ideal platform for exploring innovative and creative avenues in the field of marketing and overall startup culture.
Other than marketing, I have been able to see the startup ecosystem more closely and attend such events that I wouldn’t even know if I weren’t involved in LUTES as a board member. So, the position has a wide range of possibilities that will make your year the best! The amount of knowledge, networks, and different skills I have gathered is something I will always be grateful to LUTES and its members whom for we are doing this.
Overall the year as a LUTES board member was a holistic experience full of finding harmony in chaos, but the best thing that makes me go towards professional growth.
If you have anything to ask, please come and find me from Parvi, mail me at riikka@lutes.fi, or hit me with a message in telegram @riikkakuopio. See ya!

Hey there!
I’m Hannes, and this year, I’ve had the privilege of serving as the Vice President and Partnerships Manager at LUTES. I’m currently in my third year of studying energy technology, and my journey with LUTES began almost as soon as I started my studies two years ago. In the previous year, I was a member of the Events Team, which laid the foundation for my current role on the board. I’ve always been drawn to the entrepreneurial way of doing, which is what led me to LUTES. While I’m already a solo entrepreneur, my time within this vibrant community has convinced me that I’ll be starting my own startup in the coming years.
Over the past few months, I’ve gained invaluable experience in fundraising, delivering compelling presentations, meeting with key stakeholders in the startup ecosystem, and organizing a diverse range of events. Admittedly, my schedule has been quite demanding at times, but I’m genuinely grateful for the opportunity to acquire real-life skills that I couldn’t have gained through my previous roles and experiences. Within the LUT campus, LUTES stands out as the absolute best place for learning, networking, and personal development. The more you invest in LUTES, the more it gives back to you!
These are a few examples that I’ve done this year:
- Conducting a report about South Karelian startup companies (it’s still not completely ready but it will be in a month).
- Crafting multiple grant applications to local and national foundations to secure future funding for LUTES.
- Engaging in negotiations with LUT University, Lappeenranta City, and other stakeholders with future partnerships and collaborative projects.
This role is for someone who enjoys working with numbers and envisioning the next big things that LUTES is doing in the future. Previous experience in fundraising is not mandatory because I, along with other previous board members, will provide you with guidance and support to master the necessary skills and techniques for successful collaborations. In this role, you learn to think outside the box and make cold calls to conquer the next big thing.
My role has not been confined to desk work and grant writing. I’ve also had the privilege of organizing three new awesome events for LUTES this year. LUTES Park was a half-year project that brought together 1000 students at the beginning of the freshman weeks. Following that, LUTES Showcase was designed to introduce the possibilities within LUTES to freshmen a few weeks into the school year, with the insightful speaker Kristo Ovaska. The most recent event I orchestrated was the Skinnarila Startup Excursion, during which we explored several of the most significant and promising startups in the campus area and Lappeenranta.
In summary, my role has been exceptionally diverse, extending well beyond fundraising efforts. The future offers limitless opportunities for partnerships, collaborations, and novel endeavors. This role is a perfect fit for those with a broad, visionary perspective!

Hello all!
My name is Nette and I am a fourth year student studying Industrial Engineering and Management. My journey to LUTES started two years ago when I first heard about LUTES. I was immediately very interested in LUTES and I decided to apply to the board. Last year was my first year in the LUTES board as the Events Manager and I learned a lot about organizing different kinds of events. This year I have been the Startup & Project Manager in the LUTES board and next I will tell you more about this position and what I have learned as being a board member in LUTES.
So what is this board position like and would you be interested to apply? The aim of this position is to bring value to students who already are entrepreneurs or are eager to become one. The value can be brought in different ways. For example, this year I and my awesome team created and implemented LUTES Connect – to help our members to connect with other startup ecosystem players, Founder Finder – the team building tool, pitching nights and Forward – the idea accelerator.
This position was actually just developed last year and I have been the first one to step into this. What it means is that there isn’t a right or wrong way to fulfill this responsibility. It is up to you how you want to pursue the aim behind this position! However, what is needed in this position is to have an innovative mindset and eagerness to create new ways that bring value for our entrepreneurs and like-minded people. I think this position is perfect for someone who enjoys envisioning new ways to do things and dares to implement their ideas, while also wanting to develop themselves and learn new things all the time.
Over the past two years as a LUTES board member I have learned things that I would have never learned just by studying and taking courses. I have learned to manage and create bigger and smaller events and projects, team leading skills, and also my english skills have improved a lot. I definitely encourage you to apply and you will be surprised how much you have learned and improved yourself after a year! If you have any questions regarding this position or overall for board applications, please contact me and I will be happy to help!
